But after that their elephants had to face another problem, that is, they were supposed to break another door built with sharp egded weapons embedded on it. This wounded their heads. So, the angry elephants went back to Chalukya soldiers and stabbed many. It was a great loss for Pulakesin. Even these doors were broken using huge tree's trunks. Again they could not enter into the fort. They were stopped by a huge and strong wall. Like this he tried for nearly a month. Then he planned to defeat the Pallavas by making them starve. He waited nearly for six months. Unfortunately, what he planned to them happened to his force. No food. It was a huge army consisting of thousands of elephants, lakhs of soldiers, bulls etc. Pallava force which retrieved from the north had already wiped out everything. Surrounding villages have already been evacuvated. Chalukya's could not even get good drinking water. Pulakesin then met Pandya King. Since Maamalla rejected to marry his sister, Pandya was very angry over Pallavas. Therefore, they became friends immediately. Pandya agreed to supply food for the Chalukyas. They had an agreement that after winning Pallavas, area north of Kanchi would be merged with Chalukya kingdom and south of Kanchi for Pandya. Pandya wanted to rule whole of south India and Pulakesin wanted the whole fame of defeating Pallavas (that's why he did not ask for the force). Pulakesin received a message from Vaengi. Vaengi was ruled by Pulakesin's younger brother Vishnuvardhan. He was very uncapable. He wrote that Harshavardhan may attack Vathapi now and he felt uneasy to rule Vaengi due to riots and his subjects were not happy with him. This letter made Pulakesin very angry.
At the same time he sent Narsimha and Paranjyothi with a small capable force to fight with Pandya for supporting Pulakesin. (Narsimha did not want to welcome Pulakesin). Paranjyothi was asked by Mahendra Pallava to save Narsimha in the battlefield as well as from Sivagami. He was also asked to go to his native village to meet his mother, uncle (a doctor). (Paranjyothi wished to marry his uncle's daughter). These things made Paranjyothi to have a great regard for Mahendra Pallava.Kannan was reminded to take Narsimha to Sivagami by Kamali on their journey. Pulakesin asked for Narsimha as soon as he entered the fort and disappointed by not meeting him. Poets sang in praise of both the emperors. Pulakesin was showed the beauty of Kanchi. But Mahendra Pallava did not reveal Naganandi's presence.
When Pulakesin was about to leave Kanchi, Mahendra Pallava revealed that he changed the letter of Naganandi which was carried by Paranjyothi and came there in person as Vajrabahoo. Pulakesin felt cheated. He could not tolerate this. |
